Installing USB power in the engine bay.

If you’ve seen some of my drive videos, you probably noticed the rear facing camera I like to run on the 4C. It captures some really great action shots of the friends I’m driving with. The only problem is that the drives are much longer than the batteries in the camera can last.

When I was looking for options on how to get power to the camera, I came across the Vemote Waterproof Motorcycle USB Phone Charger. It’s waterproof construction made it perfect for the somewhat open 4C engine bay. I also really like that it included a voltmeter so I can keep an eye on my battery, plus a mechanical switch to prevent it from drawing power when it’s not needed. I did see some similar power adapters with soft switches, but those would still cause a drain even when “off”. The quick disconnect plug on it also gives me a convenient way to plug in a battery maintainer.

Installing it was very straight forward. I did have to extend the ground wire, but that was very easy to do. List of all tools used at the bottom of the page.
