Alfa 4C Ignition Coil install on Abarth 500

I like to encourage people to DIY, and replacing ignition coil packs is something anyone can do. It’s so easy, we did it in the parking lot at our monthly FIAT meet.

To get at the coil packs, you have to first remove the engine cover. This will be different on other vehicles, but on the 500 Abarth the air filter box serves double duty as the engine cover.

To remove the airbox, you have to disconnect the air inlet and air-oil separator tube at the front, the hose going to the turbo on the passenger side, and two vacuum lines in the back. The lines in the back have press fit on connectors that can be released by squeezing on the connectors. Once all the hoses are disconnected, the airbox just pops off.

With the airbox removed you are staring right at the coil packs. First, pull back the little yellow locking tabs on the electrical connectors and then the connectors pull off. Each coil pack is held down by a 10mm bolt. Remove the bolts and gently wiggle the coil packs up out of the spark plug tubes.

Putting the new coil packs on is largely just reversing the procedure. Do make sure the boot on the coil packs are centered in the hole as you install them to ensure they successfully go on the spark plugs. Get the bolts started by hand first to prevent cross threading. Also, be sure not to overtighten; they only require 7 lb-ft.

Reinstall your connectors and airbox, and you’re done! You can watch a video of the procedure below.

Prices have dramatically gone up on these. I’ll likely not restock once they are gone.
