It’s far from the perfect tow truck, but isn’t it the perfect tow truck for me? Painted in the iconic Abarth livery, it screams “Fiat Enthusiast” quite loudly. When I heard the previous owner was thinning his collection, I reached out to see if it was on the chopping block. I couldn’t resist picking it up as it just fits the vibe of my junkyard. So, what’s the story behind this Abarth tow truck? Well, it turns out that this vehicle was originally a workhorse for the Italian recovery organization, ACI. They used a fleet of these tow trucks to rescue vehicles and assist motorists on the highways of Italy. Originally, they had a bright orange paint job. We don’t really know at what point in its life this one got the Abarth livery.
Driving this truck is an absolute hoot. With no power steering, it’s a true test of your driving skills, but it handles surprisingly well for its heft. However, there’s one quirk that you might find surprising – the lack of insulation. The exhaust runs right underneath the driver’s seat, making it an incredibly toasty experience.
