FM1660

You don’t hear about many good driving roads to the east of I-35, but I’ve found a few. First on the list is FM 1660. It’s located right at the beginning of the Texas Blackland Prairie, 24 miles north east of Austin, and 10 miles east of Round Rock. FM 1660 starts on the north side off State Highway 29 to the east of Georgetown, and goes all the way to State Highway 95 to the south of Taylor. I don’t care much for the northern leg of the road, so I like to enter it in the middle off US 79 in Hutto. It’s an 11 mile jaunt from that point to the end.

The Blackland Prairie is pretty flat and featureless, but what makes 1660 unique is it follows Brushy Creek. This gives you a nice juxtaposition of open farm land and a tree lined greenbelt. The road is all high speed corners that you hardly even need to lift for. You’ll gobble up that 11 mile stretch in no time.

Unfortunately when I filmed the video tour, there was construction going on. Normally the road is quite a nice drive, but there’s several road hazards you have to watch out for due to construction. You’ll see what I mean in the video below. Hopefully they’ll complete the repairs soon and have it back to its former glory.
