Normally I buy sports cars from mostly Italian or German makers, with a couple Japanese exceptions, but now I have something completely different. A 1993 XJ40! This is my first ever Jag, and only the second British vehicle.
A friend of mine posted it for sale on FB with an attractive price, and the pictures looked great. He explained to me that it was having some fuel issues, but we were both confident in my abilities to sort that out. After looking the car over and being satisfied with it’s condition, we started it up with the help of some ether. It would run for a moment, but then cut out. That was good enough for me so we set out loading it on my trailer.
Since it would run as long as you gave it a little squirt of ether, we decided that I’ll run alongside the car spraying ether while he drove it onto the trailer. I had to shout directions to him of course as his view was blocked by the hood. It worked a treat!
After we got the car up on the trailer, I notice that she was dumping fuel while she was running. No wonder the engine wasn’t getting enough gas; most of it was going on the pavement instead! It’ll be a couple weeks before I have the time to look at the problem in detail, but I’m hoping that I can just replace a few fuel lines and be cruising in my new Jag in no time. She really is in great shape for her age. I’m very impressed with how the Jag materials have aged. Old enough to qualify for antique plates, too!
